This Vanitas project derived imagery specifically from both her mother and her mother in law’s collections of domestic treasures as they relate to traditional idea of vanitas (17th century dutch still life painting reminding the viewer of the inevitability of change). The silk flower arrangements these were based upon will never decay, yet the memory of them as they cover in dust changes the measurement of meaning. Collections repeated across America in fake flowers, figurines, china, lace, and hand me downs: items carefully preserved in curio cabinets and public storage units; collections encapsulating significant memories of loved ones. They are loving signifiers of the past while also becoming collections of mass proportion.
Choose from one of five acrylic paintings that were originally created on baltic birch but have now been recreated as a richly colored 9" print on 11" x17" paper. The print is made on heavy stock, matte, archival paper, and are signed on the back.
Thanks so much for investing in The Petal Project!
